If you’ve been looking for a full-size 1960s Pontiac with presence, comfort, and the right kind of personality, this 1966 Grand Prix deserves a close look. It is not being presented as a concours restoration or a museum piece. It is being offered as something many buyers actually want: a handsome, rust-free, automatic-transmission cruiser with big Pontiac style, a freshened interior, major under-hood investment, and the rare 8-lug wheel and finned drum setup that Pontiac people immediately notice.

This Grand Prix is believed to be a Minnesota car. The current owner purchased it from a private seller in Excelsior, MN in 2003, drove it during the summer of that year, and then placed it into professional storage until 2023. After two decades off the road, the car was brought back with significant work performed by Theis Repair in Carver, MN, a respected local classic vehicle restoration shop.

The result is a car with the right feel for someone who wants to drive and enjoy a distinctive personal-luxury Pontiac: long hood, formal roofline, comfortable interior, big-cube V8, automatic transmission, air conditioning, and a confident road presence that feels very different from the more common Mustang/Camaro/Chevelle crowd.

No trades. Serious buyers only, open to offers.

The Story & Recent Refurbishment

This Grand Prix has had long-term ownership, careful storage, and a major effort to bring the car back as a usable, enjoyable classic.

After being purchased in 2003 and enjoyed briefly that summer, the car was professionally stored for roughly 20 years. When it came out of storage, the current owner invested heavily in the areas that matter most for a car intended to be driven and enjoyed.

Major restoration and refurbishment work was performed by Theis Repair in Carver, MN. The result is a big classic Pontiac with substantial recent work, a renewed cabin, meaningful under-hood upgrades, air conditioning, new tires, and road manners that support confident cruising.

Interior

The interior was substantially restored and rebuilt as part of the recent work. The interior alone represents at least $10,000 in materials, and this was not just a “seat covers and carpet” refresh.

  • Interior stripped out
  • Floor treated with POR as a future water / vapor barrier
  • Dynamat installed for sound deadening and insulation
  • New, well-fitted carpet
  • New headliner, professionally installed
  • 6×9 speakers installed

The interior presents as one of the strongest parts of the car. It has the feeling of a cabin that has been carefully brought back rather than simply cleaned up for sale.

There are a couple of known cosmetic items inside the car. There are two small holes in the dash from the original controls, and the center console is missing a lock. The next owner can decide whether to leave these as-is, make quick cosmetic improvements, or source replacement / restoration parts over time.

Mechanical & Under Hood

Mechanically, this Pontiac has received the kind of updates that support confident cruising. The owner estimates more than $6,000 in parts under the hood alone, plus labor.

The owner reports that the car runs well even in 95+-degree ambient temperatures, which is an important point for a big cruiser with air conditioning and a large Pontiac V8.

8-Lug Wheels & Big Drums

One of the best details on this car is the Pontiac 8-lug wheel setup. For the right buyer, this is not just a cosmetic detail. It is part of what makes a full-size Pontiac from this era feel special.

These 8-lug wheels and big finned drums give the car a distinctive Pontiac look, and they help separate it from more common mid-1960s classics. If you know these cars, you know the 8-lug setup is part of the appeal. If you are new to big Pontiacs, it is one of the details that makes this Grand Prix worth understanding.

Paint & Body

The paint is not original. In the door jambs, two slightly different colors of blue are visible from the areas that were not reached during the repaint. The current paint is believed to date from the late 1990s or early 2000s, and it presents very well today.

The body is described as rust-free, though there is some surface rust on the undercarriage.

There are a few surface scratches and small dings, but they appear serviceable for the right owner with appropriate tools, touch-up paint, and detail work. This is a strong driver-quality presentation rather than a car being represented as perfect.

For most buyers, the car will show very well as-is. A perfectionist may choose to address a few small cosmetic items over time.

Items Being Completed Prior to Sale

Why This Pontiac?

This 1966 Grand Prix is for someone who wants a real cruiser: big Pontiac V8, automatic transmission, long-hood style, refreshed interior, air conditioning, distinctive 8-lug wheels, and a story that makes sense.

It is not trying to be the cheapest Grand Prix on the market, and it is not being dressed up as a perfect show car. Its appeal is more honest than that. It has been owned long-term, stored carefully, brought back with meaningful parts and restoration work, and prepared for the kind of buyer who wants to get in, cruise, and enjoy something different.

For someone who appreciates full-size Pontiacs, the 8-lug wheels, big drums, renewed interior, and extensive under-hood investment make this a compelling car.

Known Quirks

  • Paint is older and believed to be from the late 1990s or early 2000s; it presents well but is not represented as original.
  • A few surface scratches and small dings are present, see photos.
  • Right turn signal does not automatically cancel with steering wheel.
  • Floor mounted high/low beam button does not always return to home position.
  • Two small holes are present in the dash from original controls.
  • Center console is missing a lock.
  • There are two small holes in the trunk, which are assumed to be from a dealership emblem; the new owner might choose to have a custom emblem made, to source an OEM emblem to add to the trunk, to seal and re-paint the areas, or to leave “as is”.
  • As with any classic car, buyers are encouraged to inspect in person or arrange a third-party inspection.
